As an important component of his work, he writes on topics that embrace historical subjects. He has written magazine articles, contributed essays to books, and more recently, has written many web articles on historic architecture, restoration and design.
He also lectures, and has taught occasional courses at the University of Victoria on heritage building conservation and museum exhibit topics.
Writing has been an important journey. He has written short stories, scripts and copy for museum exhibits. Most recently, he has concentrated on writing biographies. He completed his first book – a sweeping double-biography, that spans the world and 114 years, between 1853 to 1967 – at the end of 2015. New research, newly available, has required a re-write, now in progress.
In 2017, The BC Agricultural Association Exhibition Building at the Willows was published: a 320-page book with 242 illustrations. The book was launched at the Oak Bay Public Library on December 15, 2017, and subsequently won a Communications Award from the Hallmark Heritage Society.
A Second Edition – revised and expanded with 30 pages of new text and rare photograph – now 349 pages with 293 illustrations – was printed in September of 2018.
Following that, a new Third Edition has been printed in October of 2025: Again revised and updated with new research (and one important correction) the book now has 331 illustrations.
